Mercy

A few thoughts on mercy in writing…

The Golden Rule states we should treat others as we want to be treated. We are taught to “turn the other cheek”. Or as Abraham Lincoln said, “Those who deny freedom to others, deserve it not for themselves”. Each of these statements can be applied to writing. When we sit down to write a new story, we must take ethics into consideration. I believe that includes offering mercy where mercy should be applied. It can be easy to sensationalize a story or write in such a way that our subject is belittled or misunderstood. It’s important for the writer to remember the power he holds in the words used to share information. Sometimes one or two words are all it takes to shift the feel of the news story.

If I were writing an op-ed piece, it is understood that I am sharing opinions and not necessarily sharing various points of view. However, if I was writing a news article, it should include less emotional writing and more factual language. As a writer, I need to relay information that is appropriate for the type of writing I’m doing. Even in opinion or feature pieces, the writer has a responsibility to remember to offer mercy and kindness. I don’t think it’s appropriate to slander, smear or belittle the subject just because it may feel justified. Someone may write about me in the same way someday!

I hope as a writer, I can offer compassion and understanding to my subjects. There is always more to the story than we usually see. News stories are typically biased in one way or another. Simply remembering that can help me feel compassion if needed.
